First Things First: 5 Things to Do After Moving into a New House

Moving

You’ve unloaded the truck, paid your movers, and are officially alone with your new home. Congratulations! After all, this is an exciting new adventure and the hardest part of moving into a new house is finally over.

So, what comes next?

Moving into a new house comes with an overwhelming list of chores and to-dos. From organizing to decorating, cleaning and installing, it’s difficult to know where to begin.

Don’t worry, there will be plenty of time to celebrate your big move soon. In the meantime, take a deep breath, roll up your sleeves, and follow these necessary steps before you do anything else around the house.

5 To-Do’s After Moving Into A New House

Before you can sit back and enjoy your humble abode, be sure to check these items off of your to-do list. You’ll be glad you did.

1. Set up Your Utilities

To be safe, it’s best to set up your utilities two weeks before your move-in date. If you’ve done this already, then you’ll want to make sure everything is up and running the day you move in. First, inspect all of your light switches and electrical sockets. Also, be mindful of your air conditioning, running water, and gas – cable and internet aren’t the only utilities you’ll need!

2. Clean

Even if the previous homeowner left everything spotless (and hopefully they did), it’s best to pay special attention to all the nooks and crannies before arranging your furniture and unpacking your boxes. No need to do a deep clean – just be sure to sweep the floors and take care of the spots that really need it.

If it’s in your budget, consider hiring a professional cleaning service while you tend to all of the other items on your list.

3. Inspect Your Boxes and Belongings

Make sure all of your belongings and furniture weren’t damaged during the move. It’s also best practice to conduct a home inventory in case anything is missing. In the unfortunate event of damaged or lost items, be sure to notify the moving crew immediately. They should be able to resolve the matter swiftly and peacefully.

4. Unpack the Essentials

It may take days to get through every single box you own. Try to tackle the most important ones first, like those that contain towels, clothes, toiletries, and bedding – basically anything that goes into your bedroom and bathroom. You’ll be happy to have all the items you need for a hot shower and a place to rest after an exhausting day. If you have time, the kitchen is a great room to check off your list, too.

5. Put all Boxes in Their Designated Rooms

Even though you won’t have time to unpack the rest of your boxes, you can still stay organized by bringing each box to the room where it belongs. That way, you won’t be darting from room to room when you go to put everything away in the coming days.

Moving into a new house is a challenge all in itself. And the first 24 hours in your new home can be daunting. But if you prioritize your to-dos and take the process day by day, you’ll be celebrating your space in no time.
