Answers to the ‘Too Much Stuff’ Problem
Moving
Many people have a lot of stuff. We don’t usually notice that we have too much stuff until we clean, or we get ready to put our house up for sale. When this happens, we need answers to our ‘Too Much Stuff’ problem.
The answers to what to do with too much stuff
There are great ways to get rid of too much stuff, some of which take very little effort:
How to sell your stuff online
When you have things that are still in good condition and still functioning, you can sell them online:
- Craigslist has a big list of cities across the country where you can list things for sale. Pick the city closest to you, and click on it. If you have not already done so, set up a free account. Once you have your account, take pictures of the items you wish to sell, write a good description of each one and upload its picture. Selling on Craigslist is free.
- eBay is also a wonderful way to sell all that stuff you no longer want or need. Selling on eBay is not free, but the fees are reasonable. You have a choice of only selling your items locally, or listing them for anyone to buy. If you open the listing for anyone, you will have to ship your item.
There are also other places to sell your extra stuff: Amazon.com, Swappa, and Facebook.

Garage Sales and Yard Sales
You always know spring has arrived by all of the yard and garage sales along the roads. Whether you join with your neighbors or hold your own yard or garage sale, here are some helpful tips for holding a successful sale:
- Dirty things do not sell well. Clean and shine everything you put out for sale. Not only will your stuff bring a higher price, your stuff will attract more potential buyers if it is clean.
- Hang clothing on hangers on a rack, as it displays better and sells faster when displayed like this. Make sure it is all clean, and if possible, get the wrinkles out.
- Although your items may have sentimental value to you, price them reasonably
- Advertise your garage or yard sale in local newspapers, post fliers about your sale in businesses near where you live, and post signs leading to your sale the day of the sale. You can even list your sale on Craigslist.
- Display your items neatly on tables. Keep them neatly displayed, as people will mess up your displays picking up your items and looking at them.
Flea Markets
- The keys to success at flea markets are the same as at yard or garage sales. Be ready, as flea market purchasers love to negotiate.
When you have items left over after your garage, yard or flea market sales, donate what doesn’t sell to Goodwill, Salvation Army or a similar organization knowing that they never have ‘too much stuff’.
