1. Gold and silver combinations

Gold and silver mixed metals used to be all the rage, but the combination is falling out of favor with high-end designers. While the combination can certainly look elegant in some spaces, it’s not generally something that today’s designers are leaning toward. Instead, a quieter look of monochromatic metals is taking over.

2. Industrial spaces

Industrial spaces became all the rage as the modern home movement took off, but today they’re becoming less popular. While many professionally designed homes still feature some industrial touches, you won’t see quite as many spaces with industrial features like toolbox sinks or exposed pipes in the walls. Instead, industrial features are being used in small doses to add to rather than define a space.

3. Wood pallet decorating

Rustic-inspired homes remain beautiful and unique, but designers have had enough of the wood pallet. Today, this helpful little design hack is being used sparingly – in coastal homes, for example – and is not quite the wildfire trend it once was. While there’s nothing wrong with using rustic furnishings or decorations in a home, today’s designers are advising avoiding leaning too heavily on the style.

4. All velvet everything

Living rooms rich in velvet furnishings hark back to an era when royalty ruled, and as such, they’ve historically been a popular furnishing in upscale homes. Today, though, they’re beginning to become less popular. While a rich, velvet chair propped in a corner can still overhaul a home, many designers agree that velvet as a whole is becoming unfashionable.

5. Faux taxidermy

Faux taxidermy rose to popularity as a more family-friendly and slightly less grotesque way to enjoy a three-dimensional touch on a gallery wall. Today, though, designers are moving away from these decorations in favor of geometric sculptures and photo walls, instead. While faux taxidermy will likely always have a place in interior design, it may not be in the living room for much longer.
