3 Home Décor Trends to Leave Behind
Living
Trends come and go all the time in the world of home décor. Some are just plain tacky and never should have existed, while others mimic fashion trends and follow the same pattern—what was hot one season is passé in the next. The home décor trends that need to be left in the dust are being replaced by sleeker, more modern trends to take you into the future.
3 Trends for Home Décor That Have (Almost) Taken Their Last Breath
Some trends that have held sway for years are finally being edged out. Others have not had much staying power and are going the way of the dinosaur.
1. Stainless Steel and Brushed Metal Finishes
The age of stainless steel is finally coming to an end. For most of the early 2000s, this finish reigned supreme in kitchens across America. Every home buyer wanted matching stainless steel appliances as the crown jewel for their cooking and eating spaces.
Now, this finish is so played out, new choices are finally coming onto the market to edge it out. Matte appliances, colored appliances, and even appliances that mimic antiques in design are stealing the limelight. Now you can buy a new refrigerator that looks like it came straight out of 1957, or a new stove that is designed in the style of wood-burning ones from the late 1800s.
2. Oversized Sofas, Dining Tables, and Other Hugely Proportioned Furniture
Huge used to be the “big” thing. People wanted giant couches for sprawling on to watch TV, huge dining tables that could host a dinner party of 12, and a TV with a screen to rival the ones at the movie theater.
Now, oversized is out. Instead, you should be buying furniture that fits. The scale should be relative to the size of the room and the size of the other furniture. Buying big just to be large and in charge isn’t cool anymore – in fact, it’s a bit tacky.
3. Blindingly Bright, Stark White Walls
White walls had a huge surge in popularity for a while. Almost every design blog and website was awash with homes that had white walls, white furniture, white accessories—white everything. The look was cool, fresh, clean, and modern, so it’s not surprising it became so popular.
However, people are starting to invite color back in their lives. Soft neutrals, soothing blues, and even bright jewel tones are edging back into homes. Even wallpaper is making a comeback, and homes are featuring accent walls with crazily-patterned paper.
White isn’t gone for good, though. Lots of homeowners are still choosing it for rooms that get flooded with light for that fresh, airy vibe. It’s still an option, but the trend isn’t quite top dog any longer, and it might still be on its way out.
Instead of Blindly Following Trending Design, Choose What Speaks to You
If you love any of the above waning trends, by all means, feel free to buck popular opinion and use them in your home. The point of happy home décor is to surround yourself with what you love. Choose interior design that speaks to you and you’ll love your home.
