How to Fix Common Design Mistakes

Common design mistakes – they happen to everybody. Nobody is immune from choosing the wrong paint colors, picking out ugly curtains, or making a poor décor decision once or twice. If you do find yourself living with a design decision you’re now regretting, there’s probably a fix for that. Here are some common scenarios plus Rx for what ails your home.
3 Common Design Mistakes You Can Fix
Common design mistakes happen to everybody at some point. Here’s how to fix them.
1. You Painted the Walls Too Dark
You loved the color on the paint chip and in the can. You thought it would create a cozy, moody vibe. Unfortunately, you were wrong. What now?
Repainting the walls is an incredibly annoying hassle, especially for dark paint. Instead of wasting an entire weekend doing it all over, make a few décor changes.
Add more lighting to brighten up the room. Then, splash in some lighter, brighter colors with accents and furniture if the dark mood is dragging you down. White always looks fresh, as do mint, teal, and silvery gray.
To further lighten the feeling in the room, remove some of the furniture, declutter the shelves and surfaces, and create breathing space.
2. You Bought a White Sofa – and You Have Messy Pets
You invested in a white sofa with a household full of pets and/or kids. Now you need to invest in stain-proofing.
A rinky-dink can of fabric protector won’t cut it. Instead, you need to bring in the professionals to have your sofa cleaned and treated. The right treatment will repel liquid and stains, but not pet hair.
For that, we suggest a good vacuum with a hand-held attachment. You can also throw lots of washable blankets on the sofa for pets to lay on.
3. You Hung the Artwork Crooked
You found a piece of art you absolutely love. You couldn’t wait to get it on the wall. You got out the stepladder, hammer, and nails, and went to town. You stepped back to admire your handiwork… And the picture was crooked.
To fix it, there’s no quick solution. You have to do it over.
Take down the picture, then get the tools you really need: a level, a pencil, and a helping hand. Have the extra person hold up the art until it’s where you want it (make sure it’s not hung too high – eye-level is best). Use the level to get it straight, then mark where the nail holes should go with the pencil.
Hammer in nails. Hang artwork. Pat yourself on the back.
